Rock Samphire (Crithmum maritimum) grows in an environment most plants would find difficult - exposed to salt, wind and intense coastal conditions. That natural resilience has made the plant increasingly interesting to skincare researchers.

In a human pilot study involving 12 subjects over the age of 50, researchers investigated a biotechnology-derived Rock Samphire material. Following controlled disruption of the skin barrier, areas preconditioned with formulations containing the samphire material showed faster barrier recovery than placebo and untreated areas.

More recently, research published in 2025 used a three-dimensional human skin model exposed to UV-related damage. A full-component Crithmum maritimum extract promoted epidermal regeneration in that experimental model. Importantly, this was laboratory research rather than a clinical trial of a finished skincare product.

The research does not mean every Rock Samphire extract will behave identically, but it helps explain why this extraordinary coastal botanical has attracted increasing interest in modern skincare.
